When I was little I loved drawing cars. Cars are like faces: the challenge is to draw their shapes so accurately that people recognize them.

Having said that, when this patron gave me this vacation photo to paint I didn’t recognize any of them. I think two of them might be old Cadillacs? I was born in 1969 so these predate me. If you know what they are can you message and tell me?

Anyway I’ve never gone to Cuba but I’ve always pictured it as being lit with a deep Indian yellow for some reason. So I started this painting with a wash of that color and made sure it glowed through even to the end.

I really love this painting.
